For this family-oriented couple who both work with kids, throwing a wedding that felt like a large family dinner was the aim. With its casual style and kid-friendly vibe, Moby Dicks seemed the ideal spot and judging by Gui Jorge’s joyous snaps, Julia and Curtis made the perfect choice.

“We both have large families and wanted to make sure everyone felt welcomed and part of the evening, like a big Sunday night family dinner which is a family tradition of ours,” Julia explains. “We also needed to choose a venue that allowed children to come and ‘be kids’.”

The pair met in their first year of university and it took Curtis a while to work up to a very sweet proposal. He cleverly crafted 7 surprises for his bride-to-be, to represent the 7 years they had been together. Julia recalls, “After many other surprises Curtis gave me an Old School View Finder that had pictures of us and our travels. The last slide was ‘Will you…’ and he was down on one knee with a ring that he had designed. I was speechless for two hours, crying with tears of joy!”

Julia’s advice for other brides and grooms is definitely worth sharing. “Make sure you have lots of time at your reception to sing and dance with your friends and family and most importantly have fun and laugh… Your guests remember the ‘feel’ of your wedding not the small details.”

Being the last of four to marry in her family, Julia knew who she wanted on her dream team and it included Fi from The Colour Room and Emma of All Made Up. The Colour Room has been doing Julia’s hair since she was just 12 years old, and as for Emma she says, “Emma is like one of the family now. She has done our makeup for all my family’s weddings.”

Julia was inspired by her grandmother’s wedding day look - a lace dress and waterfall bouquet. Her beautiful lace overlay dress was from Peter Trends Bridal and her bouquet by Kelvin Hall Floral Design.

Playing the casual groom perfectly, Curtis cut a sharp figure a linen jacket from Rodd & Gunn with a bow tie and pocket square from OTAA and a special touch, his grandfather’s watch.

The styling was kept simple to work in with the relaxed, chic look of the venue. Florals supplied by the venue were complemented with glass hurricanes and little terracotta potted succulents created by the bride and groom.

When it came to the venue, these two knew they’d hit the jackpot. “We absolutely fell in love with Moby Dicks when we first saw it," says Julia. "The view was breathtaking and we made sure to start the reception in the afternoon so our guests could enjoy it. Their styling matched our relaxed beach theme and had a homely feel. Their staff were amazing at organising the day and making us feel relaxed throughout the whole process.”
