In this brave new wedding world, the wedding ring can take on many a guise; precious metal, gemstones, ink and needle… the last wedding I went to the couple drew each other’s on with a special wedding Sharpie, then vowed to do the same each anniversary! The point I’m making is that while the symbolic tradition remains, the form of the wedding ring can be anything but traditional.

Melbourne artist and jeweller, Seb Brown, is not one to be informed by tradition. Having begun his creative career in graphic design, he found the sculptural expression of jewellery far more compelling and began to experiment with the craft. Self taught, his style conveys a charming naivety that’s highly textural and intentionally raw.

“I’m influenced by the materials I work with and like to work quite quickly, almost in a stream of consciousness,” he says. “I am constantly experimenting and my practice involves photography, illustration, sculpture and collage; which all tie in together nicely with the jewellery.”

While his style leans toward the masculine, Seb’s designs can also display a more feminine delicacy. “My favourite piece is the Slab Ring,” he tells me. “It represents my artistic style and can be made in myriad different shapes, weights, colours and textures! It can be black, goth and moody or gold, diamond-y and super girly.”

Seb’s influences are as vast as his designs, with ‘accidental constructions’ informing a lot of his work. “A pile of rubbish precariously placed on a bin, a plank leaning against a window. I guess walking in the streets is my inspiration.”
