Nell & Steve’s Weekend Wedstival

“I’ve literally had a crush on Steve since I was 12. I still do.” Says Nell of her groom, the two having known each other since they were kids. Their weekend-long wedding celebrated their epic journey together and the tribe who supported them along the way. And for Nell, there could be no other than Todd Hunter McGaw to capture it all.

“When we locked in Todd to photograph our wedding, I couldn’t have been more giddy than if we’d booked The Rolling Stones as our band” says Nell, who’d been following Todd’s work for several years. “He captured the moments that epitomised the day, without ever intruding on the magic.”

And this wedding was pretty darn magic; not in the shiny, mega-budget sense, but in the joyous, love-fuelled and hug-filled way, helped along by Boston, their tooth-achingly sweet toddler. “Every part of the wedding was a reflection of what we love in life,” the pair tell me, the result being several days of free-spirited festivities.

But finding a venue that could accommodate a weekend wedstival was no mean feat, and the couple were almost ready to elope when they stumbled upon Midginbil Hill Farm. With a breathtaking backdrop, ample lodgings and no curfew, the Tweed Valley property ticked every box. Their casual hilltop ceremony took place under the giant fig tree, with the spectacular view of Mount Warning dominating the panorama.

Finding the dress was an easier affair, with a simple requisite from the bride, “I wanted the freedom to be able to chase our two year old and dance like a gypsy.” And in her gorgeous Grace Loves Lace ‘Loren’ gown, dancing is just what she did, well into the night, to the sounds of Andrea Soler. “Her quirky French songs and gypsy beats stole our hearts,” she says of the whimsical folk singer, who had everyone on kicking up their heels and even breakdancing to her earthy tunes. The weary party-goers ended the night eating leftovers around a massive bonfire, cosily wrapped in crocheted blankets. Perfection.
