Emily & Gareth’s Art Deco Wedding
For many Australian couples, wedding traditions are rapidly becoming a thing of the past. In many ways, I think this is wonderful; two people deciding how to celebrate their commitment in whatever way works for them. But it’s also lovely when family tradition plays a role in a couple’s big day. Emily and Gareth chose to tie the knot Hyde Park, where Gareth not only popped the question, but where Emily’s parents were also married 29 years earlier. I bet her folks were rapt.
Emily and Gareth’s Art Deco wedding was a simple yet elegant affair. The ceremony took place in a quiet corner of the park and was helped along by their beautiful fur-child, Harriette the Labrador. Emily’s penchant for old-world glamour shaped the theme for the day, but above all, the couple wanted their wedding to be natural, honest and fun.
Keeping it local was high on the agenda, with a vendor list comprised of the couple’s favourite suppliers in their neighbourhood. Their local bar (Swallow in Maylands) is a cosy little venue with beautiful art deco details and was the perfect choice for the reception. The cake, gorgeous flowers and hair and makeup were also provided by suppliers well known to the couple.
Bargain-hunter Emily found her stunning Colette Dinnigan dress on Gumtree. She tells me “I knew immediately that it was what I wanted – simple, elegant and reminiscent of beautiful 1920s and 30s gowns.” She paired it with a 20s style veil for the ceremony, and later on, a deco headpiece for the reception.
Aimee Claire was the talented lass behind the lens, and comes with lots of lovely words from the couple. “Aimee’s photos are natural, beautiful and honest, which is just what we wanted. She was so fun to work with, and was wonderful with our guests, putting them at ease and taking some great candid shots.” See more of Aimee’s work here.
