Corey & Nathan’s NGA Wedding was the Perfect Mix of ‘Opulence and Silliness’

Tying the knot in front of ‘The Knot’ at the National Gallery of Australia, Corey and Nathan threw one heck of a wedding for their 120 guests. “We wanted to achieve the perfect mix of opulence and silliness,” they share. “Just like us.”

The opulence was achieved through a rich palette and gorgeous florals by Laurel & Lace that worked beautifully against the autumn backdrop and the gallery’s brutalist architecture. The silliness, Corey and Nathan explain, “came from our talented entertainers, Sydney Drag Queen royalty Felicity Frockaccino and Tora Hymen, who worked the room perfectly and had all our guests in stitches.” Then there were the elements that crossed between opulent and silly, such as exchanging crowns instead of rings and having a surprise flash mob performance by the Canberra Qwire (Canberra gay and lesbian choir). And let’s not forget special wedding party guests, the couple’s dachshunds – Hugo and Dolly.

After some atmospheric portraits with Lauren Campbell, canapés and live music ensued on the gallery lawn, then the party went indoors to the decadently styled Gandel Hall. “Instead of a traditional bridal table, we had a large VIP table in the centre of the room for our closest family and friends,” the grooms share. Touchingly, places were set on the VIP table for Corey’s parents, who have both passed.

Instead of a band or DJ, Nathan made a continuous mix of the couple’s (and their guests’) favourite dance floor fillers and synced it with some visuals projected onto a big screen. “It had a bit of a music festival vibe and saved us money on a band or DJ,” he explains.

And the proposal? Corey tells us “Nathan got down on bended knee one random night in our living room after a couple of wines and with Elvis Presley’s ‘Can’t Help Falling In Love’ playing in the background. I then hijacked the proposal and got on bended knee and proposed back.” Love it!

Lush florals by Laurel & Lace contrasted beautifully against Clement Meadmore’s dramatic ‘Virginia’ sculpture at the National Gallery of Australia.“Because of its shape, this sculpture is better known as “The Knot,” Corey explains. “We Tied the Knot in front of the knot”

“We walked down the aisle, led by our five nieces, our sisters and brothers-in-law, Corey explains. "Nathan and I were walked down the aisle by Nathan’s Mum, Kerrie, and our two dachshunds – Hugo and Dolly. Kim Yang Music played a cover of Amy Winehouse’s ‘To Love Him’ as we walked down.”

Having already done the legal bits before the big day, Corey and Nathan enlisted Sydney Drag Queen royalty, Felicity Frockaccino, to lead their ceremony. And the best bit? Instead of rings, these two kings exchanged crowns! Corey wore a design by Ashlee Lauren and Nathan’s was by Olena Grin.

Photographer Lauren Campbell, was the lady behind the lens and captured all the fun and the feels of Corey & Nathan’s day perfectly. We’re loving the moody portraits, which make the most of the ethereal autumn setting and the gallery’s architectural design.

“All food was amazing and done by the talented team at The Big Group,” Corey tells us. Canapes for cocktail hour, then a sit-down entree and main, followed by roaming dessert canapes. “We also provided our guests with some late-night snacks of hamburgers and toasties.” Perfect!
