Nick & Sophie’s Laid Back Forest Wedding

When Sophie and Nick’s guests received a wedding invitation asking them to “please wear your gumboots” they probably suspected that this would be no ordinary wedding – and they were right! At Dusk Photography captured their laid back day, which started in a rainforest and ended in a paddock.

The venue was Sophie’s family property, “Eulalie”, in Robertson, New South Wales – a place close to the couple’s hearts where they spend much time together. “The day started with a walk through some protected rainforest on the property which finished at an amphitheater-like clearing where we had our ceremony,” says Sophie. “It perfectly fit our 150 guests, who were seated on hay bales with buckets of sunflowers lining the aisle. The rainforest provided the most beautiful backdrop.”

The tone for the day was definitely set when Sophie walked down the aisle to Sugar Sugar by the Archies, wearing a simple tiered lace dress by Grace Loves Lace, paired with her old tan leather boots. After a ceremony filled in equal parts with tears and laughs, guests made their way to a marquee overlooking the paddock, where The Baker Boys provided the fun and chilled out soundtrack.

With no florist, no stylist, and no hairdresser or makeup artist, this wedding truly was a DIY affair. Sophie and her bridesmaids bought and arranged the flowers themselves as well as taking care of their own hair and makeup, and the groom and his sister prepared the entrées and salads to accompany a spit roast by Feather and Bone. Mini Magnum ice creams were served in lieu of a traditional wedding cake, and the pair wisely engaged Special Event Planners to coordinate everything on the day.

The couple’s advice for those planning their wedding? “Do it your way. We threw a lot of traditional formalities out of the window and just kept the bits and pieces that we liked. We’ve been to so many weddings so we wanted ours to have a less formal and really fun feel to it.” And who wouldn’t have fun eating ice cream in their gumboots??
