As experienced wedding guests, Naomi and Rich knew exactly what they wanted for their own day; great food and wine, and a chilled-out vibe. Their relaxed celebration at Byron Bay’s Fig Tree Restaurant, was pared-back style meets tropical island party. After witnessing photographer Mitch Pohl at work at a friend’s wedding, Naomi already knew his relaxed style made him the perfect fit.

The ceremony took place under the vast greenery of the giant fig tree, and their venue’s namesake. With a naturally beautiful setting, a vintage afghan rug was the only styling required. Surprising guests, their friend Nick did the honours of officiating, after the couple secretly sorted the legal bit a week earlier in a private Japanese inspired ceremony.

Wanting a chilled-out feel for their day that was relaxed and fun, the inspiration for their tropical Byron Bay wedding came to the couple organically. Naomi shares, “The style originated from me not wanting to spend a fortune on table flowers and I found a local pineapple farmer who could drop off 170 pineapples at a bargain price, and so the tropical luxe theme grew legs.” Lush palms, crystal glassware and natural fibres completed the eclectic yet fuss-free décor.

Byron Bay’s Fig Tree was an easy choice of venue, as it had everything they needed in one place with flexible wet weather options. Luckily the rain held off until after the ceremony, but this bride knew how to deal with a little adverse wedding day weather. “Don’t take things too seriously. You have one day to enjoy it, so enjoy it. You have worked your ass off to create the day you want, so when it rains, dance in it!”

Wanting a bridal look that was timeless and traditionally bridal, Naomi opted for a Karen Willis Holmes gown with added arm bands and a cascading two-tiered veil. For dancing the rest of the night away, she switched up her style and changed into a KITX silk bias cut dress.

With food high on the couple’s list of wedding day priorities, the Fig Tree Restaurant had the couple covered. “So tasty, intricate and refined, and lots of it! The best thing about our wedding at the Fig Tree was the food. All our guests couldn’t stop raving about it.”

In-lieu of wedding favours the couple made donations to Aboriginal health service Filling the gap, which given Naomi works in the dental industry, was an important cause close to her heart. As guests boarded the bus at the end of the night, they were given water bottles with a tag telling them of the donation.
