Shauna and Ho-Zheng hit it off after meeting through mutual friends, starting hanging out when Ho-Zheng moved to Melbourne and fell for each other in the aisles of Ikea. Spontaneous gifts and out-of-the-blue dates have played a big part in this couple’s courtship so incorporating an element of surprise into their wedding day was a no-brainer – “We love surprising one another and so we thought it would be heaps of fun if we could pull off a surprise wedding!” Shauna says.

With a backdrop as funky as Fitzroy fireplace showroom, Oblica, Shauna and Ho-Zheng’s special day had all the makings of a perfect party. The pair admit to being pretty laid-back in the lead-up and perhaps the surprise nature of their wedding took a bit of the pressure off – that, plus some fantastic vendors who kept their secret on the down-low, including fab photography duo, The Robertsons.

So what’s the key to a stress-free wedding? According to these sweethearts, it’s all about being true to yourself and prioritising what’s important. “When we first spoke about what we wanted our wedding to be like, we both agreed that we wanted it to be small, simple and relaxed.” Says Shauna. “We wanted to make sure that we had time to eat and spend time with our guests which helped us in deciding to have both the ceremony and the cocktail style celebration in one venue.” No need for transport? Tick. No seating plans? Tick. We think these two might be onto something!

Bunched Together really came through on the floristry front and the lush arrangements of foliage and blooms really popped against the crisp canvas that is Oblica.

Talk about relaxed - not even the stress of DIY could ruffle this couple’s feathers. “We made the fabric backdrop with a combination of white, off-white and light yellow fabric cut into strips and knotted together…” Shauna shares, before admitting that one of Ho-Zheng’s old sheets may have also made it into the mix!

A feasting table and roaming canapes meant guests could maximise mingling opportunities. “The food was perfect,” Shauna tells us, “and the team at Firecracker Events did an amazing job. We liked the idea of having a beautiful table to feast on, as I love cheese and meats together, yum! It made it easy for everything to be relaxed - plus you can eat as much as you want!”

A particularly memorable moment for Shauna was when she and her bridesmaids snuck out to the back to change, and could hear the squeals of guests as they realised a wedding was about to unfold!

Excuse our squeals but we love a good naked cake, especially one as cute as this! The couple called in good friend and cake-maker, Vincent of Choppers Cake for this sweet little creation.

Despite a bit of a blunder with her original dressmaker, Shauna absolutely shone in her backup option – an embellished Anna Campbell number, no less! Her bridesmaids kept things simple in minimalistic grey búl shifts while the boys wore bespoke Jesse & Son suits, custom-made in Bangkok.

Newcastle based photography duo, The Robertsons made the trek down south and judging by their crisp, vibrant captures, it was well-worth the trip. According to Shauna, they made quite the impression on this happy couple. “The photographers… well they are like our friends now, so that says a lot!”
