Sarah & Pete’s Tiny Vintage Wedding
Some brides wouldn’t dream of wearing their mum’s wedding dress, but this 1976 vintage original would have us foraging through the mothballs in a millisecond. The very special frock was only one of many unique and entirely untypical touches in this Kidogo Arthouse wedding, craftily captured by photographer Gavin Wyatt.
The theme of Sarah and Pete’s “progressive celebration” was casual sophistication. “We didn’t want to buy into the wedding ‘production’,” they say, “and wanted our guests to be able to enjoy some finer touches – like drinking Cristal instead of Jacob’s Creek.” Not so doable with a sit-down reception for 150… but with just eight of their nearest and dearest in tow? Bottoms up!
Champagne saucers were filled straight after the ceremony at Fremantle’s Kidogo Arthouse. The beachside gallery was chosen for its art-flanked walls and effortless ambience. “We just added a few pockets of flowers to give it a little more ‘wedding ceremony’ feel,” and hauled in their own retro patio table for the signing.
Speaking of retro, about that dress again? “My grandma made it,” Sarah tells me. “It has a wonderful heavy drape, a bit of swish and was so comfortable and non-fussy to wear.” Her striking headpiece was sewn and decorated by mum (who also put her needle to the hessian ‘pew cones’ and lunch table napkins – must run in the family), and those gold-fringed kicks are Gorman, circa autumn ’14.
The self-professed “band nerd” married her man to the tune of the WA Trombone Choir, before a hop, skip and quick coffee stop at Bread in Common found the intimate party gathering at a long table lunch in The Wine Store & Kitchen (now Young George).
While the getaway car, Sarah and Pete’s “beloved green ‘shorty’ forty series LandCruiser” certainly deserves a mention, their post-ceremony bottle-o run was made all the classier in a limo. “We stopped at the local in our chauffeur-driven Rolls Royce stretch limo to pick up another bottle of champagne for the road,” they confess. “We received some very sweet wedding day wishes from a fellow customer, but no discount!” Well I never!
