Vibrant saris, intricate henna, rice fights and Bollywood dancing, it doesn’t get much better than an Indian wedding. High school sweethearts, Maddi and Julian wanted their day to be “fun and not too formal, a chance for everyone to share in the celebrations.” And who better to capture all that colour than Sydney’s Nina Claire?
With both families sharing notoriously bad luck with weather for special occasions, the pair were careful to choose a venue with a good plan b. The Springs in Peats Ridge was the perfect option, and fortuitous weather allowed for a stunning outdoor ceremony with the gum trees as their backdrop.
“We wanted to incorporate parts of my family’s South Indian culture for the wedding, whilst also celebrating our Australian home and lifestyle,” says Maddi, who looked stunning in a traditional sari bought in her grandparent’s hometown of Manipal. The Hindu ceremony included the Jeelakarrabellam, where a mixed paste of cumin and cane sugar is placed by the bride and groom on each other’s heads, to symbolise moments of sweetness and inevitable difficulties that are anticipated within the marriage.
“I wanted to wear a white dress for the reception as Julian had worn an Indian outfit for the wedding,” says Maddi, who found her perfect Anna Campbell gown at Savvy Brides. “I loved this dress immediately! I was in and out of the store within 45 minutes.” Julian’s costume change had him looking sharp in a black slimline suit from Rembrandt.
The couple tells us their families were a huge part of their day and an enormous help with the preparations. “We really didn’t realise how much organisation and work goes into planning a wedding and would have been completely lost without the enormous help from both our families and friends.”
