It was your “typical water-cooler romance” for these two, having met at work as public servants in Canberra. Their Poachers Pantry wedding was equally chilled, playing out on the rolling paddocks and gorgeous grounds of this sweet country spot. “We both liked the rustic theme and wanted to let the natural beauty of the venue speak for itself,” say Karina and James, and there to capture all the sunny-splendour of this casual affair was Nouba favourite, photographer Lauren Campbell.
After what James describes as a “dorky” post-dinner proposal on the beach (which sounds perfectly wonderful to us), these foodies let their tastebuds do the venue choosing. “It’s a Canberra institution,” they say of the little smokehouse and vineyard located just outside the capital, renowned for its glorious grub and grog. “We had eaten there numerous times with friends and family before, and it seemed like a natural choice of venue as our life together has revolved around Canberra.”
Suitably rustic and relaxed, this place needed very little in the way of decorations. So they kept it simple, with a pretty scattering of dried-flower bunches and “thrifted” antique books (like the amusingly titled The Joy of Sects) in lieu of table numbers. “We purchased a second-hand typewriter to allow people to type us personalised notes at the reception,” says James, himself wielding impressive chalkmanship for the seating chart and welcome sign.
While he scrubbed up ever-so-schmick in a shirt and suspenders from Scotch & Soda, it’s hard to take your eyes off Karina, draped in her show-stopper of a gown from Carla Zampatti. After a ceremony on the lawns of the homestead, underneath a beautiful tree at dusk, their party of 100 headed to the Pantry for fun and feasting and some scrummy, Sweet Bones cake. Save us a slice?
