Jess and Steve’s Red Feather Inn Wedding
It was Jess’s bright red lipstick that initially caught Steve’s eye, and this Tassie couple’s wedding was as unique and playful as her striking signature shade. With a modern spin on vintage, their bowtie and banoffee pie filled celebration played out at the Red Feather Inn, and photographers Fred+Hannah were there to capture all the quirk and fun of the day.
Jess and Steve had in fact spotted the Hadspen venue in Fred+Hannah’s shots of a previous wedding, prompting them to go see it for themselves. “We were so inspired by its natural beauty and locked in a date straight away,” says Jess. Deciding on her dress was considerably less instant. “After trying on over 15 dresses I knew that I wasn’t going to find what I was looking for on a rack,” she says, so had her lace, silk and rhinestone embellished gown custom made.
A bespoke beaded headpiece from Adelaide’s Percy Handmade perched perfectly on her soft celestial up-do, styled by Grant and the team at The Loft Salon. The date of the wedding was determined by the availability of makeup artist Liv Rodgers (“yes,” Jess assures us, “she is that good!”) who rightly encouraged the bride to wear her red lippy on the day.
Adding to the colour were Steve and his groomsmen’s bright socks, a last minute idea, complements of Pinterest. Steve’s burlap bowtie (from etsy store Amy2004marie) tied in perfectly with the theme, and Janita Preshaw from Beautiful Flowers Gifts and Garden put together exquisite, loosely arranged bouquets and individualised buttonholes for the boys.
After a rose petal sprinkled ceremony in a private garden at the Inn, the newlyweds and their 66 guests moved into the onsite cooking school for a gourmet, barbeque-style feast. The wedding cake – no less than a towering croquembouche – was made by Jess’s good friend Emma and miraculously constructed in a nearby caravan!
The couple’s advice for the day? “Get to know your photographers,” says Steve, who found a pre-wedding shoot made it easer to relax on the day. Jess also recommends meeting with your vendors prior to the event, and all importantly, “choose not to be a bridezilla, enjoy every minute and have fun!”
