The Australian bush provided ample inspiration for Jesse and Araluen when planning their nuptials, so when they found St Joseph’s Guesthouse they knew they were onto a winner. Set in the picturesque McDonald Valley in St Albans, NSW, the imposing stone facade of the former church is surrounded by endless trees and grassy tiered levels. It was the perfect spot for this couple’s carefree country wedding, photographed by Scott Surplice.

Araluen planned the decor from start to finish, from the mismatched ceremony setting outside the old church to the eclectic vibe of the reception nestled in the garden. She says: “We both have a love for the land and the country spirit, so that’s what inspired us to style our wedding vintage but relaxed, in a cocktail garden setting.” Handmade cushions, Persian rugs and antique furniture were dotted around the venue, while festoon lighting hanging overhead gave a subtle festival atmosphere. Native floral arrangements by Hunter Valley Bouquets added to the rustic charm, while hoola hoops, giant Jenga, bocce, golf, twister and a kids’ tipi added the fun element.

Dressed in matching brown leather chelsea boots, the couple chose not to walk down the aisle but instead had a first look before their guests arrived, shared with a special furry family member. “Jesse gave me a beautiful pearl necklace to wear and we enjoyed a glass of champagne together with our beloved dog Humphrey. It was truly a priceless intimate moment that was a very special part of the day,” Araluen says.
