Rachel & Anthony’s Bloom-filled Butterland Wedding

March 10, 2015
When your day is in the hands of florist extraordinaire Katie Marx and her furniture-designing partner, Greg Hatton, you’re in for something mighty special. Playing out at the crafty pair’s old Newstead butter factory, this laidback Butterland wedding is full of loveliness (and of course, epic blooms), captured by the one and only Jonathan Ong.
“We really trusted Katie to come up with something amazing, and she didn’t disappoint,” say Rachel and Anthony. “We had tall blossom branches along trestle tables with smaller arrangements of tulips, sweet peas, rhododendron, flowering gum, ranunculi, jasmine trails and other seasonal flowers in plum, green, white and soft pink.”
Designers themselves, these two knew to let the raw and rustic venue do the talking, so kept the decorations minimal. “We believe in the ‘less is more’ mentality, so used a lot of restraint” – but couldn’t resist the addition of a ping-pong table (who could?). “We used lemons collected from family and friends’ trees as place settings,” they say, “and hand-lettered the signage and menus ourselves.”
Their guests were greeted with coffee and fresh blackberry jam and chocolate-filled donuts, made onsite by Daylesford caterer, Spade to Blade. And the deliciousness didn’t end there. Following a sweet midday ceremony, the intimate party lunched in Katie’s floral menagerie, sharing plates piled high with seasonal local produce from the Daylesford-based caterer (not to mention a three-tiered Pandan Chiffon wedding cake, care of Anthony’s mum).
Rachel went “understated, yet pretty” on the day, having fallen for her gorgeously hand-stitched Temperley London gown on Net-a-Porter. Once her stunning bouquet of peonies, garden roses, deep plum lilacs, sweet pea and jasmine vine was flung, their guests were encouraged to take the floral arrangements home. “Katie was so sweet as to setup a ‘flower shop pop-up’ in the foyer so people could get their flowers wrapped for the journey.”
