Minimal formalities, good food and even better wine – these were Steph and James’ wedding day priorities. Their ceremony, held at Castlemaine Botanic Gardens had all the trimmings of a relaxed, contemporary affair, but it was their reception at Boomtown Winemakers Cooperative that really ticked all the boxes. The industrial blank-canvas venue with incredible vino to boot, made the couple’s dreams a reality. Summarised as one big party, the day’s candids by photographer Rolan John captured just that.

Bridal Party

Keeping things interesting, Steph chose two dresses to wear on her big day. For the ceremony, her Self Portrait gown had just the right amount of glam with its dramatic asymmetrical sleeves, while still feeling relaxed with its ankle length. For the reception was a Paris Georgia slip dress with a low back, paired with Maryam Nassir Zadeh boots – effortless and chic. Keeping Steph’s short tresses intact was her good friend Hair By Bec, while Karen Burton was responsible for fresh looking makeup. The groom’s suit was by P Johnson, who the couple highly recommend for personally tailored suits.

Ceremony

Married at the Castlemaine Botanical Gardens, just a stone’s throw from the reception, Steph and James describe their ceremony location as secluded and untamed. Champagne and beer on arrival was a non-negotiable for the two. “Our housemate Darren is incredible at making drinks, and he made an amazing aperitif, (think fizzy mango wine),” recalls Steph. The duo say their celebrant Deb Holder nailed their brief – short, sweet, simple, honest and not too formal.

Steph and James tell us they couldn’t have been happier with their photos by Rolan John, whose work James had known of before giving him the gig. “We’ve always been drawn to his natural and candid style of wedding photography,” says Steph. “He made us both feel so relaxed and he captured the spirit of the day perfectly.”

Reception

Steph and James say Boomtown Winemakers Cooperative was the perfect venue for their reception with its rustic, chilled-out feel. They were particularly impressed with owner Tim Sproal, who they describe as easy-going, energetic, passionate and welcoming. Their caterer, Ella Mittas, who came recommended by Tim, ensured food and wine complimented each other, which was extremely important to the couple. “We are both pescatarian and didn’t serve any meat – and Ella’s love for locally grown fruit and vegetables meant that this was pulled off perfectly,” says Steph. “The tables were laden with rustic, share-style plates of food and plenty of delicious local wine, we still have friends and family talking about it.”
