Australian Blank Canvas Wedding Venues
Keen to put your own stamp on your wedding? To make it a day that completely and utterly reflects what you and your other half are all about?
You’re not alone. For a while now, customisation has been a big deal on the wedding scene. Couples are increasingly eager to style, DIY and transform their wedding venue in a way that says ‘this is us’. We for one, are stoked about this.
In a lot of cases, it all starts with a blank-canvas venue. Whether it’s an incredible farm shed, a warehouse or just a pretty patch of land, amazing things have been done with four bare walls and a roof (or, even without those things).
Our friends at WedShed are sharing 12 of their fave blank-canvas wedding venues.
1000 £ Bend / Melbourne, VIC
The quintessential Melbourne warehouse space, 1000 £ Bend is tucked down the end of a laneway in the heart of the CBD. This venue is big – like 300-person wedding big – and is every industrial-loving bride’s dream come true. See our favourite 1000 £ Bend weddings here!
Wilgowrah Weddings / Mudgee, NSW
The Wilgowrah Weddings hay shed is epic. It’s the ultimate blank canvas space (there’s nothing at the site except for some great big bales of old hay and a water tank). Positioned at the rear of a paddock with Mudgee’s trademark hills throwing magnificent purple hues around at sundown, it’s the DIY farm shed you might have been looking for.
Perth City Farm / Perth, WA
Perth City Farm is true to it’s name – a farm in the middle of town. It consists of an industrial warehouse-style barn that opens up onto a large outdoor courtyard. Photo ops are abundant – stroll around the farm’s large veggie patch, rustic buildings and gardens.
Wollombi Barnstay / Hunter Valley, NSW
Set on 100 acres of Hunter countryside, Wollombi Barnstay sleeps 25 guests in a large, wooden converted barn. The property has been landscaped with more than 2,000 trees creating pockets of beautiful parkland, as well as private access to a river. Just add a marquee and you’re sorted.
EarthHouse / Byron Bay, NSW
A Mediterranean-inspired building, EarthHouse is built out of rammed-earth with polished concrete floors and an open fireplace. The venue features a cathedral-style roof with exposed beams and a large deck with views over the Byron Bay hinterland. There’s also a 100-year-old fig tree on the property to hold your ceremony under.
Penny’s Hill / McLaren Vale, SA
With both polished and more rustic celebration spaces available, Penny’s Hill Winery is an awesome option for couples searching for a blank space within the vines. ‘The Stables’ has a no-nonsense sawdust floor and gorgeous exposed beams while ‘The Gedney Room’ still feels very country but is perhaps a little more stiletto friendly.
The Substation / Newport, VIC
Constructed in 1915, The Substation is an incredible blank canvas for the couple keen to combine history with industrial architecture. Huge arched windows, high ceilings and open spaces beg for all kinds of creative ideas, our favourite being hanging suspensions of flowers.
Cupo / Brisbane, QLD
A beautifully renovated urban warehouse, Cupo is a versatile blank space, with movable walls, full length mirrors, polished floorboards and loads of natural light. The rest is up to you!
Euroa Butter Factory / Euroa, VIC
There are so many different spaces, both big and small, that make the historic Euroa Butter Factory perfect for intimate and large weddings alike. Previously a butter and ice factory, the site now offers rustic, rural awesomeness for all kinds of celebrations. There’s also an incredible B&B upstairs for the bridal party or close family.
Stonebarn / Pemberton, WA
Amazing stone house + trufflerie + river + plenty of blank canvas spaces for couples to transform = Stonebarn. There’s a great verandah that overlooks a lovely dam that would be perfect for a long table lunch, or otherwise ‘The Gazebo’ – a blank-canvas corrugated shed that opens out onto the dam and native forest beyond.
Jimbour Homestead / Toowoomba, QLD
Yes, Jimbour House is pretty majestic and grand and all that, but it’s ‘The Hangar’ on the property that made our jaw hit the deck. An unusual arched shape, The Hangar is a shed large enough to fit an aeroplane, with large sliding doors that really makes the most of the pastoral views.
Avalon Sailing Club / Sydney, NSW
Tucked all the way up in the leafy Sydney northern beaches suburb of Avalon is this gem of a sailing club. The rustic timber building has plenty of character and seaside charm, plus unbeatable views out over Pittwater and a waterfront deck.
